#425 - Fugazi Circus, Digital Colonialism, and the real Ned Flanders
IRL this week:
Watched the ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE circus show at Club Fugazi by the 7 Fingers crew, which is pure circus (acrobats, unicycles, etc) but hits nothing like Cirque due to how close you are to the performers, and the narrative nature of the acts tracing SF history. GO SEE THIS!!!
Saw the Fungineers perform live with their unique brand of live puppet DJs, which honestly works better at festivals than in a club but is still a lot of fun
Watched The Mitchells vs Machines, an animated family movie that sticks to certain trends (dopey family acceptance story) and completely bucks others (ADHD web influenced jokes and doodles on top). 90 something % on Rotten Tomatoes and worth the rating.

Alex Cornell | San Francisco based Designer and Musician — www.alexcornell.com
Dude is impressive- he cofounded Uberconference, wrote and sang that adorable indie hold music song it uses, sells photographs, and collaborated with Tycho. Fun portfolio.

Neocolonialism & the Dark Underbelly of the Digital Nomad Movement — medium.com
Had a few back and forths with some friends in response to a tweet claiming expats are colonizers, not immigrants, and this is one of the articles turned up in defense.
There's no doubt digital nomadism can become digital colonialism if none of the dollars stay local and laws let gentrification run free. But if one spends consciously, I fail to see how it's anything less than good for the locals.
Here's another one noting 'expats' is for white while 'immigrants' is for everyone else.
The Atrocities in Cambodia | Noam Chomsky — www.youtube.com
Thanks to Review reader Max who sent me this video in response to last week's share, and pointed out Noam actually used primary sources better than the others of the time, which is why his numbers were distorted in hindsight.
This channel is full of digestable Chomsky content - I can see why people fall down his rabbit hole!

Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music
2000s web denizens will remember the flash version of this site - it grew up in features and functionality!! But the proprietor sure didn't - bro, why make a genre catalogue website if you hate on most of the genres? 😅
Uhuru March for Reparations — www.youtube.com
Channel 5 News (fka All Gas No Brakes) never fails to entertain and disgust with their gonzo journalism at the front lines of America's culture wars, and this bit where they have a Black correspondent ask white reparations protestors for $5 is priceless.
Dean Sherman - Spiritual Warfare — www.youtube.com
This preacher was Matt Groening's 90s neighbor and thus became the template for Ned Flanders. You can see the voice, look, and mannerisms in him right there!
